Day 22 – What you’d like to change about your favourite franchise?
That would be Mass Effect or Dragon Age probably, who both have the same issue at the moment for me. And I’d want them to move away from trying to outdo other action rp games and take a step back and remind themselves what about their games made them actually famous and popular. The role playing aspect, the replay value by having choices actually change something along your story. For the NPCs to have personalities that can actually clash with your own.
I liked Andromeda. But it played more like a fixed protagonist + fixed story to me than any other Bioware title. (It was an improvement over DAI though bc at least the Protagonist actually had a great character and wasn’t a completely hollow shell.) I want to play games like KOTOR or DAO but over the last few years I’ve gotten the feeling that the Bioware that did those games simply doesn’t exist anymore. (The people who did almost all left the company so I am not that far off.)
At the moment only 2 companies make the kind of RPGs I like to play. Obsidian & Larian Studios. But both of them stick firmly to isometric games due to budgeting reasons. I personally don’t mind too much – I can immerse myself in that just as well as I can into a DA game or a good book. But I know the sld school style is a deal breaker for many people and I wish they could experience this really great story telling in a way that suits them better.
Well, Anna more or less took the words out of my mouth. I talked about that a few days back when I said I want more story than combat and action – and that basically comes down to it. I don’t mind combat but if I need to play 30 to 60minutes of stupid and not even challenging combat to get 5 minutes of story (looking at you, SWTOR flashpoints) I start looking somewhere else for my gaming experience.
In general I would love for Bioware especially to come back to actually telling stories instead of masking an action-combat game as RPG.
