Steam Summer Sale Haul!
Ah, the cursed and beloved Steam Sale. The love of my gaming life – the curse of collecting games one never has time to play anyways.
When Anna told me that Fallout 4 was on sale, I had no choice – I immediately started Steam and started browsing. 50%, oh, the temptation. But then again – I never played a Fallout or Bethesda game, for that matter. And the fact that many people say it has a lot of features that people love in MMOs…
I don’t like MMOs.
Seriously. I love the idea of many of them and every time Anna tells me something of the SWTOR storylines, the characters or the look and feel of LOTRO, the secrets of The Secret World etc., I’m sad I don’t like to play it, but every time I try it, I’m just bored out of my mind. I just have no immersion whatsoever and all of that running around… nah.
Plus, despite the 50%, Fallout is still 30€. Hrmpf. So, in the end I decided against it. After all, we’re still in the middle of our Dragon Age project and we haven’t even started Dragon Age Inquisition, so if I’m honest, I’ll be playing Dragon Age for the rest of the year on and off, and then the Winter Sale will come.
I couldn’t however possibly pass on the chance to get all Half Life games for a mere 7€, despite being the censored variant (hostile soldiers are robots). Half Life was one of the first games I excessively played and I’ve stayed a Valve fan. I love the ridiculousness of the guards, the weirdo aliens, the strange guy in a suit and just the overall feeling of it. Ah, Half Life.
(At the moment, Leander is playing and cursing the whole time. Hehe. The three-headed hacking monster. You know which one.)
And Alien Isolation also made its way into our game library. We heard that it’s either terrifying or boring and while I certainly won’t play it (I’m a total bunny when it comes to horror in any way. I didn’t make it more than ten minutes into Dead Space 2 because of just NO.), Leander is really looking forward to it.
We also thought about getting Witcher III for 25€ but I haven’t played the series yet and Leander wasn’t reeeeally interested. Same goes for Shadows of Mordor for 12€.
But the next Sale will come. And then, Fallout will probably be mine 😉
Ah, you will like Fallout 4, I think. The story is not as deep as in BioWare games, but they’re coming closer to that. And you have freedom to do whatever you want, and to build nice and/or ridiculous things.
And I looove the (female) voiced protagonist. Courtenay Taylor, “Jack” from Mass Effect, made it into the top 5 of my favorite VAs.
As for Witcher 3 – the world looks amazing, the story is good and the gameplay seems to be fun. I’m watching Gopher’s playthrough, so I think I know what the game is about. What makes that game a complete no-buy for me is the sexism that permeates that world on every level. 98% of the questgivers are male, 98% of the women in the game are background characters and/or victims of violence, except for the few “special snowflake” women like the sorceresses, Ciri and Cerys. If you’re a woman in this world and don’t have special powers/abilities (or are at least a heir to a throne), you’re unimportant. Or a victim. The few background “shield maidens” on Skellige are not enough. Too little, too late. And I’m not even touching the matter of diversity here (hint: there is none). The first game was way better in that regard, despite the “collectible cards”.
Crying shame, really, because otherwise it would be a game that I would love to play, even though it forces me to play as a scruffy white dude. What a waste.
