Game rec – Amnesia™: Memories
A tiny recommendation post because of summer sales for Amnesia™: Memories is in order. Why?
BECAUSE I SUFFERED AND YOU CAN SUFFER WITH ME!
Amnesia (not to confuse it with Amnesia the horror game) is a visual novel that is build like a dating sim. You are a young woman who has lost her memories and has to get them back. The catch? You really shouldn’t let anyone find out that you lost your memories because it looks like there is a real possibility that someone was trying to kill you and you have absolutely no idea whom to trust. Additionally you have a sort of demon living in your head that may or may not be related to your memory loss. Once thing is for certain: The only way to get him out of your head and back to his world is to push him out by remembering. And the fun starts…
There is 4 different routes to play in the beginning, each of them being in a sort of parallel universe to the other three. Each of them focuses on a different character in your life and your relationship with them and each of them requires a different approach. If you get it wrong, if you make people suspicious of you or if you trust the wrong person: You meet a rather gruesome end. And dying is actually not the worst end you can get in those cases.
In all four universes you meet a mysterious person who seems to know more than they let on. They secrets you only can get to by finding the happy end solutions to the first four stories.
This is a visual novel with a high replay value. The music is very nice, the graphics are quite beautiful and the story pretends to be about sweet relationships and is anything but. It gets creepy like hell at some points. Some characters feel like your best friend and worthy of all the trust, only to turn out to be the complete opposite in another universe. You never know. And the goal of the game isn’t stress free, sugar sweet romance. If you are after that you will most likely die quite often. It’s about manipulation and finding out how most characters tick so you can actually manage to stay alive and a free person until the end of the game. Spoiler: Everyone is creepy except maybe for one person…
There is a suggestion about in which order to play the worlds as to not spoiler yourself for major plot twists. But that is optional, you can go about hit however you want in the end. There is also a 12 episode anime about the story that I would not advise watching before you played it. It’s neat though, a nice thing for afterwards.
And the reason why I advertise it right now? Until the 4th of July it is on the Steam Summer Sale for 90% off, meaning you get it for under 3 Euros. You can find it here.
