Day 13 – Favourite Game of last year?
I think just one is something I can’t do. Like, the games I liked are so different from each other they are not really comparable. Despite the media shitstorm (which I still find almost completely unwarranted, especially on the scale it was) I loved Mass Effect Andromeda a lot. Was it perfect? No. But neither were any of the previous ME titles if we are being honest. MEA was beautiful, had a great and fun combat system and a very likeable protagonist & supporting cast. And most of all: It got really great support. Literally everything that got rightfully criticised at launch got patched rather quickly. The only thing I’d still criticise is that you are locked into a certain personality to a certain degree. No matter what you do. But since I liked this personality a lot it wasn’t personally a problem for me. (I can see how it can be though if this is not your cup of tea)
Another one was Dream Daddy. I play a lot of visual novels and dating sims. They are fun and calming, and I am just in general really fond of interactive fiction. Dream Daddy was the best one I played in forever. It may look like a parody or a joke when you see the ads but it is anything but. It has some of the most inclusive and sensible writing I’ve seen in quite a while and rarely have I laughed so much about the genuinely funny dialogue. Plus my in game daughter is the best person alive!
And lastly: Divinity Original Sin 2. This game came as a surprise for me. It took everything I already liked about the first one and made it better. A classic looking game that feels fresh and innovative, that has absolutely amazing writing, great friendship and entertaining and heartwarming romances. On the gameplay side it is rather intuitive if you know crpgs even a little bit, has a very well thought through combat system and satisfying sneak & thievery mechanics. The voice acting is brilliant and the soundtrack is probably the best one to come out this year in my opinion.
I think, the only game that came out this year that I actually played to a point where I can say something about it, was MEA, which I really enjoyed. Rather short and boring answer, I’m afraid… I haven’t really played Divinity Original Sin 2 much yet, so that’s really not something I can comment on yet and the only other games of this year I would’ve been interested in where on consoles I don’t own, so… MEA it is.
