Day 23 – Have you tried a game, hated it, then tried again, and loved it?
Funnily enough that would be SWTOR. I played it in early access and all I could think about was: This is not LOTRO. This sucks!
I wasn’t completely sold on the game even though friends told me to try it. I did, started a Smuggler at a beta weekend and didn’t like it. When the early access began I started a Jedi instead bc a friend swore that light sabre combat is cool. I started with a Consular and didn’t understand the play style at all – but I also didn’t really want to. I was annoyed that half my LOTRO guild was switching games and after 2 weeks I gave up and went back to middle earth. It took a few months until I tried again – this time a Jedi Knight & pretty quickly after that a Sith Inquisitor and suddenly the game was great.
I am still playing.
That was SWTOR for me as well. I actually wrote a whole blog entry about that: “There were MMOs and then there was SWTOR“. And the same is true for Guild Wars. I liked it back when I started playing in 2013 but there was nothing to hold me beyond the first three or four weeks; now I really love it. What made the difference was probably the knowledge of how an MMO acutally works. A similar story is true for Overwatch, that I came back to after a several month pause as well.
I cannot actually recall a game I tried and hated and tried again. It’s similar to books or TV series that won’t hold me beyond the first 100 pages / two or three episodes. I don’t have enough time to waste on things I know not to be to my taste.
Oh! The one game I tried and hated and tried again and loved even more than SWTOR: Mass Effect! I could not get into that game at first. Upon recommendation I first started with ME2, because everyone said that the first game was kind of clunky. But I barely made it beyond the 1 hour mark. It felt weird, I didn’t like Jennifer Hale’s voice that much, I barely understood what was going on, I couldn’t get behind the gaming system and the scenes that were obviously meant for emotional impact didn’t leave any impression. I left the game disappointed and bemused how it got so many fans.
Then I went back to it a few months later. This time, I directly started with ME1 and suddenly it clicked. By now I love Jennifer Hale’s voice acting and Jeane Shepard is one of my most beloved protagonists.
